- Abstract:
-
This map of the La Grande 30' x 60' quadrangle is
the culmination of a three-year geologic mapping
program partially funded under the U.S. Geological
Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping
program. Geologic data were compiled at a scale
of 1:24,000 from a combination of new mapping and
published and unpublished data. Mapping was
supplemented with numerous XRF geochemical and
limited radiometric age determinations.
Structural evolution of the La Grande quadrangle
is complex and highly conjectural, with structure
defined by faults and folds that deformed Miocene
and younger rocks. Geologic units record a
complex and tectonically active geologic history
that began some 250 million years ago. Aggregate
in the form of crushed rock and gravel has been
the major mineral resource mined in the mapped
area. Geologic hazards are most evident along the
active margins of the Grand Ronde Valley.
- Purpose:
-
Compilation of an up-to-date geologic map for the
La Grande 30' x 60' quadrangle.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The digital map information for the La Grande
geologic map is in the following computer files:
map_polygons, map_faults, map_folds. These
geographic information system (GIS) files contain
spatially referenced line and polygon features
linked to attribute information. Please refer to
the text that accompanies the map. This geologic
mapping project was partially funded under U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS) National Coooperative
Geologic Mapping program under assistance award
no. 98HQAG2037.

The spatial resolution of this geologic map data
is 1:100,000. Users should not violate the
spatial resolution of the data. While the digital
form of the data removes the constraint imposed by
the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy
inherent in map scale are also present in digital
format. At a scale larger than 1:100,000, higher
resolution data is not available and will not
yield greater real detail.
