On a neighborhood-to-neighborhood scale, local geologic conditions contribute as much as, or more than, any other factor to the hazard portion of a risk assessment. Showing in relative terms on a single map the hazard contribution of different earthquake-related hazards allows a nongeologic and nonengineering audience to work more effectively toward reducing the risk to life and property through planning, policy, and mitigation measures. The composite hazard map was developed by combining single hazard maps for ground motion amplification and slope instability. The single component maps were developed to show geographic patterns of stronger earthquake effects for two likely earthquake sources. Zones that are expected to have the most pronounced damage in any moderate or larger earthquake are shown on the map as having the greatest hazard. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to produce a relative earthquake hazard map for the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan area and to produce single hazard maps for ground shaking amplification and slope stability within the same area. Supplemental Information: Spatial data files provided include hazard map polygons for slope instability, ground shaking amplification, and relative earthquake hazard. The map is not a substitute for site-specific investigations by qualified practitioners. At any point in the map area, site-specific data may give results that differ from those shown on the map. Some appropriate uses for the map are discussed in the text. MapInfo Professional version 6.0 does not establish data set topology. This version of MapInfo can check regions (polygons) for misalignment errors such as gaps (slivers), polygon overlaps, self intersections, and duplicate nodes. If found, these errors were corrected.
