Description:
Abstract:
This digital map has been compiled from previously published and unpublished data as well as new mapping by the author. The map presents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits in the map area. Together with the accompanying text, it provides current information on the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the Richter Mountain area. Rock names follow usage of Streckeisen (1976), Schmid (1981), and LeBas and others (1986). The spatial resolution (scale) of this digital map is 1:24,000.
Purpose:
This geologic map was created as part of Robert Murray's work on a Master's Thesis at the University of Oregon, under the direction of M. A. Kays. The work was undertaken to understand the metamorphic and tectonic history and mineral potential of the quadrangle.
Time_Period_of_Content:
Currentness_Reference:
Field work was done in the fall of 1991, spring and fall of 1992, and fall of 1993.

Use_Constraints:
This digital geologic map has a spatial resolution of 1:24,000. Though the digital data format removes the constraint of scale that exist with a paper map, the accuracy inherent in map scale is also present in digital format. At a scale larger than 1:24,000, higher resolution data is not available and will not yield greater real detail. Acknowledgment of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries would be appreciated in products derived from these data.

Process_Description:
A total of 79 days was spent in the field mapping and collecting samples. Mapping was done using the 1989 provisional edition of the U.S.G.S. Richter Mountain 7.5 minute quadrangle, reproduced at scales of 1:12,000 and 1:6,000. Final draft was redrawn onto the USGS Digital Raster Graphic for the quadrangle. Petrographic examination of 126 samples was done to characterize the rocks within and adjoining the Richter Mountain quadrangle.

Process_Description:
Analytical work done at the University of Oregon included X-ray diffraction determination of serpentine minerals in metamorphosed ultramafic rocks, and electron beam microanalyzer (microprobe) analyses of metamorphic and plutonic rocks within the quadrangle. X-ray diffraction was done on a Rigaku Miniflex X-ray diffractometer, controlled by a Radix Instruments Databox controller, and calibrated to the a quartz {101} peak. Microprobe analyses were done on a Cameca SX-50 electron microprobe, calibrated using natural and synthetic standards. Analyses were performed using an initial take-off angle of 40°, an accelerating voltage of 15.0 KeV, a 10-20 nA beam current, and counting times of 10 seconds for all elements except for Mn, which was counted for 20 seconds. Analyses were corrected with the PAP correction procedure using proprietary Cameca software (Pouchou and Pichoir, 1991, Quantitative analysis of homogenous or stratified microvolumes applying the model "PAP", in Heinrich, K.F.J., and Newbury, D.E., eds., Electron probe quantitation: Plennem Press, New York, p. 31-76.)
