This data compilation is the first release of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries' (DOGAMI) geoanalytical database that will eventually provide coverage of our geochemcial and geochronological information for the entire state.
Description:
Abstract:
The Geoanalytical Information Layer for Oregon (GILO) is a spatial database of DOGAMI's geochemical (whole rock and trace elements) and geochronological data. For this release, the database contains geochemical information for 1141 samples collected during regional geologic mapping projects in central and eastern Oregon. This release of GILO - Release 1 is the first of several planned updates that will eventually provide statewide coverage of our geochemcial and geochronological information. The Geoanaltyical Information Layer for Oregon is published, as is.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Geoanalytical Information Layer for Oregon (GILO) is to assemble DOGAMI's geochemical and geochronological data for rocks in Oregon. Samples are geospatially located, provided with attribute information, and cross referenced to DOGAMI's published maps.
Supplemental Information:
This version of GILO data set is the first of several planned releases. Eventaully, DOGAMI plans to compile all its geochemical and geochronlogical data. Rock geochemistry of 1141 samples were compiled for this release of GILO. Note that five samples in this data set were collected in Idaho.
Samples were collected during mapping of quadrangles at 1:24,000 scale. Sources for 1:100,000-scale geologic attributes are from the following maps released by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (RMS-1, GMS-77, and GMS-78) and the U. S. Geological Survey (I-2683). Sources for 1:24,000-scale geologic attributes are from maps published by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.
For further information about this GILO data set, please contact Paul Staub at 503 731-4100 x224 for spatial data questions; and Clark Niewendorp at 503 731-4100 x219 for questions regarding the tabular database.

Access Constraints: None, public access - Purchased at a nominal fee. To ensure distribution of the most current public information, please refer requests for data to the Nature of the Northwest.
Use Constraints:
The GILO data set is provided in two formats: a spatial data set for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and a tabular data set for use with Microsoft (MS) Excel and Access database software. Knowledge of and access to GIS and database software packages are essential to the respective use of this product. For the spatial data set, a simple GIS viewer can be download from the Internet, some free of charge, which will allow limited access to the data without specialized software.
Understand that the geospatial representation of the GILO database or browser graphic is not intended for site-specific investigations. This data set is the result of integrating information from both unpublished and published reports, maps, and DOGAMI staff knowledge, and the accuracy of this information varies according to the original source(s). Data resolution greater than original reference map scale(s) is not available. Acknowledgment of the Oregon Department of Geology would be appreciated in products derived from this compiled data.
PLEASE NOTE: conversion of the tab format to shapefile format changes some characters ( # - .) to underscores; item names over 8 characters are truncated.
If the user has modified the data in any way they are obliged to describe the types of modifications they have performed on published or distributed materials. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent this data set, nor to imply that changes they made were approved by DOGAMI.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
Numerous queries were run to check accuracy and consistency of attribute information. An iterative process was run to find discrepancies and then corrections were made to the respective data sets to achieve consistency. The data for the geochemical localities are from many different sources and there has been no consistent program to verify the accuracy of the information.
Quantitative Attribute Accuracy Assessment:
Attribute Accuracy Value: No accuracy value is assigned to the tabular database
Attribute Accuracy Explanation: None
Quantitative Attribute Accuracy Assessment:
Attribute Accuracy Value: No accuracy value is to the point files
Attribute Accuracy Explanation: None
Logical Consistency Report:
No topology. MapInfo Professional version 7.0 does not establish data set topology. Because the data are from multiple sources, terminology varies and similar characteristics may be described differently
Completeness Report: The point dataset contains attributes that describe rock geochemistry for samples collected in central and eastern Oregon. The samples were collected and analyzed prior to December 31, 2002.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Horizontal position accuracy of this data set equates back to the original source. Uncertainties in exact location of samples are +/- 90 ft, +/- 15 m. Any displacement that has resulted from conversion of scanned paper maps (e.g. DRGs) has not been quantified.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: not available

Geochronology:
Not available for this release.
Geochemistry:
Analytical Methods - Rock chip and water-well cuttings collected by Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries staff were examined for alteration and weathering. Suitable samples were submitted to the Washington State University GeoAnalytical Laboratory (WSU) at Pullman, Washington or X-ray Analytical Laboratories (XRAL) of Toronto, Canada. Both labs prepared fused glass beads using lithium tetraborate as a flux. Samples analyzed at the WSU lab after 1990 were analyzed using the Washington State University GeoAnalytical Laboratory痴 automatic Rigaku 3370 spectrometer. Each element analysis is fully corrected for line interference and matrix effects using repeatedly analyzed reference standards. All elements which were below detection limits are reported as "n.d.". Pre-1987 WSU samples were analyzed using a manual Philips 1410 X-ray Spectrometer. XRAL used a Siemens SRS 3000 sequential X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer which reportedly gives instrumental precision on most elements of about 0.5 %.
Results have been normalized on a volatile-free basis and recalculated with total iron expressed as FeO. Major elements are reported as percent oxides. Where available, original totals or LOI results are reported as separate fields. Trace elements are reported in ppm (parts per million)
Analytical accuracy: Whole rock oxide compositions are accurate to 2 decimal points except for the TiO2 and P2O5 analyses performed at WSU after 1987, which are accurate to 3 decimal points. Trace element values are recorded as ppm integers except for the element Nb which is recorded to 1 decimal place.

The Formation field includes subgroups corresponding to smaller scale formally designated Formations (e.g. Saddle Mountains Basalt; Littlefield Rhyolite) and informally named groupings of units (e.g. Glass Hill Volcanic Group) that are comprised of a number of separate units that can be mapped individually at the 1:24,000 scale. The lowest hierarchy includes rock units mappable at the 1:24,000 scale. (e.g. Frenchman Springs member; tuff of Kern Basin; basalt of The Island).

Igneous rock nonmenclature derived from plotting the analyses on the La Bas or Streckeisen (1991) diagrams. Lithology attributes for metamorphic rocks are modified by using "meta", e.g. metabasalt. For volcanic rocks, the Magmatic Suite attributes were derived by plotting the analyses on the diagram by Miyashiro (1974). Sedimentary rocks are not subject to either classification scheme.
